Pair of Japanese Satsuma Floor Vases 20th century, each of baluster form, with slightly splayed foot and gently ruffled lip, with applied shishi handles extending into loops and bows, decorated to the exterior with opposing panels depicting figural scenes, surrounded by dense floral borders interspersed with mon badges. h. 59-1/2", w. 29"
Estimate $1,000-1,500 **There is a professional repair to the waisted base of one vase with subsequent over-glazing to the interior and over-painting to the exterior mon badge and rim bands. On the same vase, there is a 1-1/2" x 3/4" surface chip to the shoulder that has been overpainted with a matching cream background glaze. On the other vase, there is an unusual pink spotting to the glaze on the inside of the rim with no evidence of restoration. Please see additional photographs. Both vases have some chips to foot rims, crazing to glaze, wear to gilding and innate firing fissures to both shishi handles. Attractive and structurally sound.
