Continental Mahogany Bureau 18th century and later, in the Regence taste, the rectangular top above a slant front opening to a leather-inset writing surface and a central cupboard surrounded by a variety of drawers and cubbyholes, above a bombe case fitted with two short drawers over two long drawers, raised on scrolled feet. h. 44", w. 48-1/2", d. 25" Provenance: S. Arbes & Company, San Francisco, California; The Estate of Camille & Raymond Hankamer, Houston, Texas.
Estimate $1,500-2,500 **In good condition. Scattered dings and imperfections consistent with age and use. The leather writing surface has wear and old stains from use. The lock to the interior document door appears to be a replacement. Some of the small brass knobs on the interior drawers are mismatched. There is a chip of wood gone to molding at the lower left corner edge of the fitted interior. We have discovered some secret drawers and sliding compartments on the interior. The top right drawer of the base is missing its lock. Some of the brass handles could use additional brads to hold them on tight. The lower left handle has a brazed repair. This desk appears to be 18th century and is not a reproduction.
